Origami learning experience at April Saturday Club
By: Lisa S. IcenogleThe April edition of the Tate Geological Museum’s Saturday Club will feature a fun class on origami, the traditional Japanese art of folding paper into a variety of shapes, on Saturday, April 6, from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
“Students will learn to take pieces of paper, usually square and with one side colored, and fold them into complex shapes, including birds, animals, and flowers, said Russell Hawley, Tate Museum education specialist. “The results can be both striking and beautiful and can be used for holiday decorations, embellishing gift wrapping, party favors or just for impressing your friends,” he added.
According to Hawley, a study done several years ago showed that children who fold origami as a hobby do significantly better than average in certain math classes, including geometry and trigonometry. “So, in addition to providing hours of fun, it would seem that origami has academic benefits as well,” he said.
The Tate Geological Museum’s Saturday Club is free and open to children ages 7-14. The Tate is located on the southern end of the Casper College campus next to the life-sized T.rex bronze near the Tate. For more information, call the museum at 307-268-2447.
